Bola Tinubu
Nigeria: On May 29, amid sustained economic and security issues, Bola Tinubu was sworn in as the new president of Nigeria. The event took place in the capital Abuju at Eagles Square in presence of local and foreign dignitaries.

In a live broadcast Tinubu said, “As president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria I will discharge my duties and perform my functions honestly to the best of my ability, faithfully and in accordance with the constitution.” Apart from African leaders including the Presidents of South Africa, Rwanda and Ghana were at the ceremony. Delegations from the United States, the United Kingdom and China also took part.
Tinubu got 37% of votes
Tinubu also known as political ‘Godfather’ won that were won the elections that were held in February, 2023. The 71-year-old southerner got 8.8 million votes. 71-year-old Nigerian President is popular for using his power and network to back candidates for office. His immense political influence led to the merger of opposition parties in 2013 and eventually wrestled power from the then-ruling PDP in 2015 – a rarity in Nigeria where incumbents are not often defeated. In this election Tinubu has only got 37% of votes which is the lowest since 1999.
Tinubu’s opponent Buhari challenged election result
Tinubu’s opponent Buhari have challenged the election results and called it an electoral fraud. However the hearings will commence from May 30, but the court’s verdict will be given till September. The Electoral Commission has accepted that there were glitches during the ballot but refused to admit that elections were not fair.
Country is under deep economic distress
Currently Nigeria is under deep economic distress that has caused high rates of inflation, record debt, weak currency. Violence is rampant due which many Nigerians are feeling insecure. Public infrastructure is largely in a state of disrepair – basic amenities such as water and public housing are decrepit.
