During the visit, Shah spoke to hospital officials about the medical condition and treatment of 14 patients admitted there. He met several injured devotees who were well enough to interact with him.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari and BJP state president and Rajya Sabha member Samik Bhattacharya accompanied the Home Minister.
Shah arrived in Kolkata on Saturday night for several Durga Puja-related engagements scheduled for Sunday, including a visit to Belur Math in neighbouring Howrah district, the headquarters of the Ramakrishna Math and Ramakrishna Mission.
Following the stampede, the Minister cancelled his planned engagements.
Before visiting the hospital, Shah offered prayers at the Kali temple in Kalighat, south Kolkata. He was expected to return to New Delhi later in the day.
State Health Minister Dr Saradwat Mukherjee said most of the 14 patients admitted to the private hospital were stable and out of danger, although one required closer medical attention. He expressed hope that the death toll would not rise further and said he was personally monitoring treatment arrangements for the injured.
The stampede at the Chorbagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata left 19 people dead and several others injured, prompting visits by senior political leaders and renewed attention to crowd management and safety at festival venues.
