Asian Para Games 2026: PM Modi Wishes Indian Athletes As India Targets 100 Medals

Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his best wishes to India’s contingent at the Asian Para Games 2026, which opened in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, on Sunday.

In a post on X, PM Modi expressed pride in the country’s para-athletes, praising their determination, dedication and resilience. He said their achievements and fighting spirit inspired 140 crore Indians and wished the contingent confidence and success in the competition.

Para-badminton star Pramod Bhagat and para-athlete Simran Sharma carried the Indian flag during the opening ceremony at Paloma Mizuho Stadium.

India has fielded a 281-member contingent, including 168 athletes — 112 men and 56 women — competing across 11 sporting disciplines.

The team wore deep blue blazers decorated with golden motifs inspired by the Indus Valley Civilisation. The designs featured the Priest-King sculpture, the Dancing Girl figurine and ancient seals.

Ahead of the opening ceremony, Para Athletics Head Coach Satyanarayana expressed confidence in the team’s preparations, setting a target of around 100 medals. He identified para athletics as a key part of India’s campaign and anticipated six medals on the following day, including two to three golds.

Satyanarayana expressed confidence in Nishad Kumar, hoping the athlete would achieve a personal best and potentially break the Games record. He acknowledged the strong competition from leading para-athletes across Asia but said India’s athletes were prepared to perform to their potential.

The Asian Para Games 2026 will continue until October 24, with Indian athletes competing across 11 disciplines in pursuit of medals.
