Won't Tolerate Any Further Attacks On Key Installations: Pak Army Chief
General Syed Asim Munir, the head of the Pakistani Army, issued a warning on Saturday that the armed forces will not put up with any more vandalism attacks on the nation’s vital infrastructure. He also promised to bring those involved to court.
For the first time since the city experienced some of the worst acts of violence, including an attack on the state-run Radio Pakistan headquarters by Imran Khan’s followers following his detention in a corruption case, Gen Munir travelled to Corps Headquarters in Peshawar.
According to an army statement, the army chief was given a detailed briefing on the prevailing security situation and ongoing counter-terrorism efforts.
He said in his address to the Corps’ officers that the “Armed Forces will not tolerate any further attempt of violating the sanctity and security of its installations or vandalism and resolved to bring to justice all the planners, abetters, instigators, and executors of vandalism on the Black Day of 9th May” while emphasising the changing threats to national security.
On May 9, Khan, the leader of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party, was detained in Islamabad. On Friday, the Islamabad High Court released Khan on bail.
In addition, he raised awareness of the difficulties presented by information warfare and attempts to spread false information, emphasising that the Armed Forces are the focus of a deliberate campaign by adversarial forces.
He pledged that such nefarious attempts will be foiled through the support of the people of Pakistan.
“We shall continue with our endeavours of peace and stability and there will be no room for spoilers of the process,” he said.
On arrival, the Army chief was received by Corps Commander Peshawar, Lt Gen Hassan Azhar Hayat.
