PM Modi Highlights Growth Of Winter Tourism In Uttarakhand; Encourages Himalayan Visits

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed delight at the increasing popularity of winter tourism in Uttarakhand.

Speaking on his monthly radio programme, ‘Mann Ki Baat’, he highlighted India’s immense potential to develop a robust winter tourism ecosystem, leveraging the country’s mountains, cultural heritage, and adventure opportunities.

“Winter has arrived, and so has the season for winter tourism. Many countries have made winter tourism a major pillar of their economy, integrating skiing, snowboarding, snow trekking, ice climbing, and family snow parks into their identity,” PM Modi said.

He added that India possesses every potential to emulate these models and create memorable experiences for visitors.

The Prime Minister noted that destinations such as Auli, Munsyari, Chopta, and Deyara are witnessing increasing footfall. “I am delighted that winter tourism in Uttarakhand is attracting a lot of people,” he said, emphasising that the region is gradually becoming a global winter destination.

Adventure and Ultra Marathon Highlights

PM Modi highlighted the state’s first High Altitude Ultra Run Marathon, held on 2 November at Adi Kailash in Pithoragarh district, which took place at over 14,500 feet.

“More than 750 athletes from 18 states participated in the 60-kilometre-long ‘Adi Kailash Parikrama Run’.

Despite the extreme cold, the enthusiasm of participants was palpable. Visitor numbers have soared from fewer than 2,000 three years ago to over 30,000 now,” he said.

The Prime Minister underlined preparations for the upcoming Winter Games in Uttarakhand, which will attract athletes, adventure enthusiasts, and sports lovers from across India.

“Be it skiing or snowboarding, preparations for various snow-based sports have already begun. The state has also focused on connectivity and infrastructure to promote winter tourism. A new policy regarding homestays has been formulated to enhance visitor experiences,” he noted.

Destination Weddings and Himalayan Experiences

PM Modi highlighted the growing trend of ‘Wed in India’ during the winter months.

“Whether it’s the golden winter sun or the blanket of fog descending from the mountains, the hills are becoming increasingly popular for destination weddings, especially on the banks of the Ganga,” he said.

Encouraging citizens to explore the region, the Prime Minister added, “During these winter days, the Himalayan valleys offer experiences that last a lifetime. If you’re planning a trip this winter, be sure to keep the Himalayan valleys in mind.”

PM Modi’s remarks underscore India’s potential to develop winter tourism into a significant economic and cultural asset, combining adventure sports, heritage, and hospitality to attract domestic and international visitors alike.
