Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated the induction of INS Mahe into the Indian Navy, highlighting that the force is ‘rapidly moving towards self-reliance’, which he called a source of national pride.
“Every Indian feels proud when India’s security ecosystem is strengthened,” he said, emphasising the significance of the newly inducted vessel.
The Prime Minister noted that the INS Mahe’s indigenous design has drawn considerable attention and that its name, reflecting the historical town of Mahe, resonated deeply with people in Puducherry and along the Malabar Coast.
He explained that the ship’s crest incorporates the traditional flexible sword, Urumi, and the martial art of Kalaripayattu, symbolising India’s rich maritime and cultural heritage.
Journey Towards Self-Reliance
PM Modi emphasised that the Indian Navy’s strides in indigenisation and self-reliance continue to be a source of national pride.
The induction of INS Mahe demonstrates the country’s growing capability to design and manufacture advanced naval vessels domestically, reinforcing India’s strategic autonomy.
With Navy Day approaching on 4 December, the Prime Minister said the occasion provides an opportunity to honour the ‘indomitable courage and valour’ of naval personnel, acknowledging their dedication to safeguarding India’s maritime interests.
Furthermore, PM Modi highlighted several key sites promoting naval heritage and tourism across India.
Diu, near Somnath, houses the Khukri Memorial and Museum honouring INS Khukri, while Goa showcases the Naval Aviation Museum, recognised as one of the best in Asia.
The Indian Naval Maritime Museum at INS Dronacharya in Fort Kochi offers insights into the Navy’s evolution, and the Samudrika – Naval Marine Museum in Srivijayapuram (Port Blair) showcases the region’s rich maritime history.
The Warship Museum in Karwar displays replicas of missiles and other weaponry, and Visakhapatnam features a submarine, helicopter, and aircraft museum.
PM Modi urged citizens, especially those interested in military history, to visit these museums and explore India’s maritime legacy.
The induction of INS Mahe and the Navy’s focus on indigenous capabilities reflect India’s commitment to strengthening its maritime security and promoting self-reliance.
PM Modi also noted that these initiatives inspire pride across the nation and encourage young Indians to appreciate and engage with the country’s rich naval heritage.
