"Biggest Film Of My Career," Kangana Ranaut
The Kerala Story was banned by various states on Tuesday, but actor Kangana Ranaut called it “unconstitutional” when the CBFC cleared it.
“To ban a movie that has received the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) seal of approval is to insult the constitution. The 36-year-old Ranaut told reporters here that the ban on “The Kerala Story” imposed by various governments was incorrect.
Sudipto Sen’s film “The Kerala Story,” which details how Keralan women were coerced into becoming Muslims and recruited by the terrorist organisation Islamic State, has polarised political debate in the nation (IS).
On May 8, the West Bengali administration outlawed the movie after sensing tensions between the communities. Tamil Nadu theatres made the decision to discontinue showing the film, citing the law-and-order situation and a low attendance rate.
The West Bengal government’s ruling prohibiting the movie in the state was overturned last week by the Supreme Court, which also ordered Tamil Nadu to guarantee audiences’ safety.
“When a film like ‘The Kerala Story’ is made, people’s complaint is redressed. Such films help the film industry,” she said.
“The Kerala Story” stars Adah Sharma in the lead, along with actors Yogita Bihani, Sonia Balani and Siddhi Idnani. The movie has so far raised over Rs 200 crore at the domestic box office.
