Philadelphia’s police stated that the gunfire between rival groups left wounded three people at a Ramadan celebration.
Police made no evidence that the event, a party commemorating the conclusion of the Muslim holy month, was targeted.
Kevin Bethel, Police Commissioner, said, “We are very, very fortunate today that we did not have more individuals shot and anyone killed”.
“Around 30 gunshots sounded out in the park in the middle of the day, as around 1,000 people were celebrating the end of their month-long fast”, Bethel continued.
Bethel went on to say, “What we do know is there appear to be two factions within the park, who are now exchanging gunfire”.
Three people were injured, including an armed 15-year-old who was shot by cops. He was struck in the arm and leg.
Authorities stated five people were arrested, including the teen, and five guns were recovered.
Josh Shapiro, Pennsylvania Governor, tweeted, “Eid should always be a time of joy for our Muslim neighbors. And I grieve for every member of the Philadelphia Muslim community whose celebration was shattered by gun violence today”, through his official ‘X’ handle.
