On Sunday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced plans to meet the families of people reportedly killed after speaking out against drug trafficking in Punjab, as he criticised the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government over the state’s drug problem.

Shah said the meetings would take place in Mansa, Sangrur and Gurdaspur on 20 October.

In a statement shared on X on Sunday, the Minister expressed condolences to the affected families and alleged that the state government had failed to prevent the spread of drug abuse.

Shah further warned that efforts to silence those opposing drug trafficking would not stop public opposition to the illegal trade.

The Home Minister said the Union government would pursue drug traffickers and ensure they were brought to justice. He further added that efforts to eliminate the narcotics trade would continue across Punjab and the rest of the country.

Shah’s announcement comes against the backdrop of continuing concerns about drug trafficking and its impact on communities across Punjab.

The planned meetings will bring Shah face to face with families who have lost loved ones for opposing drug trafficking. His remarks renewed the political dispute between the BJP-led Union government and the AAP administration in Punjab over responsibility for tackling the drug problem.
