According to senior Congress leader Sachin Pilot, the All India Congress Committee (AICC) would shortlist names of candidates for the Chhattisgarh Lok Sabha seats within ten days.
After attending the party’s state screening committee meeting for the Lok Sabha elections that are scheduled for a few months from now, Pilot, Congress’s representative for Chhattisgarh, told reporters on Saturday.
Nine of the state’s eleven Lok Sabha seats were won by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the 2019 elections, with the Congress securing two seats.
“Names of the candidates will be shortlisted by the AICC after a discussion within 10 days. The announcement of names will be done soon so that they get enough time for campaigning,” Pilot said, adding that an elaborate discussion on the subject took place in the screening committee meeting.
He asserted that the Congress’ vote share did not decrease in the state assembly polls for 2023 as compared to the 2018 elections.
With 54 seats in the 90-member House, the BJP defeated the Congress with just 35 seats in the Chhattisgarh assembly elections that were held last year.
Despite the loss, Pilot stated that Congressmen are prepared for the Lok Sabha elections and rising costs, joblessness, and issues affecting women and farmers will be discussed.
He said the BJP government at the Centre needs to explain what it has accomplished for the people over the last ten years.
“A discussion was also held on Rahul Gandhi ji’s Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra that will pass through Chhattisgarh. Extensive preparations are being made for it. This yatra will benefit the country, society, party and everyone. The working committee meeting of the Youth Congress was also held on Saturday,” Pilot said.
