Mexican Journalist Found Dead, Wrapped In Plastic Bags With Message On Chest

One of the riskiest places in the world for journalists to work is Mexico. According to Reporters Without Borders (RSF), more than 150 journalists have been murdered in the nation since 2000.

A correspondent for leading Mexican newspaper La Jornada was found dead on Saturday, in the western state of Nayarit, a day after he went missing.

“A body found in the village of Huachines in the municipality of Tepic was identified as Luis Martin Sanchez Iniguez, 59 years old, correspondent for La Jornada,” said the Mexico City newspaper

Cecilia Lopez, deceased journalist’s wife told investigators that she had no idea of his whereabouts since Wednesday night, when she was in another town visiting relatives.

Sanchez was at home Wednesday night and spoke to his wife on the phone while he was at home; his body was discovered on Saturday morning in a rural area close to Tepic, the capital of Nayarit. Some unconfirmed local media reports said he was found wrapped in plastic bags with a written on message on his chest.

According to reports, Lopez also informed authorities that she discovered the clothes her husband had been wearing the day before she last saw him in their home, along with everything else in his wallet but his La Jornada reporter card.

In addition, the family said that “his computer, cell phone, a hard drive, and his sandals are missing,” the newspaper mentioned.

La Jornada correspondents have been targeted and murdered in the past, including Miroslava Breach, killed in Chihuahua in March 2017, and Javier Valdez, who was also a contributor to AFP, murdered in Sinaloa in May the same year.
