The Government of Bihar on Sunday signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to build six new regional airports.
The agreement aims to boost regional connectivity and improve air access in underserved districts.
The signing took place at Bihar Niwas in New Delhi. Chief Secretary Shri Amrit Lal Meena (IAS) and Resident Commissioner Shri Kundan Kumar (IAS) attended the ceremony. Shri Nilesh Deora (IAS), Director of Civil Aviation, Government of Bihar, exchanged the MoU with AAI officials.
The MoU follows the recent approval of the proposal by the State Cabinet. Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Nitish Kumar chaired the Cabinet meeting that cleared the plan.
The project includes building airports in Madhubani, Birpur (Supaul), Munger, Valmikinagar (West Champaran), Muzaffarpur, and Saharsa.
The state government has sanctioned ₹150 crore for the first phase. Each airport will receive ₹25 crore for initial development.
Bihar aims to expand air network
Chief Secretary Shri Amrit Lal Meena called the MoU a key step in infrastructure growth.
“This MoU marks a decisive step towards strengthening regional connectivity in Bihar. It will enhance transport and create new opportunities for development and investment,” he said.
Resident Commissioner Shri Kundan Kumar highlighted the agreement’s impact. “This move will improve regional air services and deepen Centre-State cooperation,” he said.
The airports will support 19-seater aircraft. They will help bring remote and unconnected regions into the state’s aviation network.
The initiative aligns with the Government of India’s UDAN scheme. It also supports the Hon’ble Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Viksit Bharat vision. Both focus on making air travel affordable and accessible for all.
India plans to add 50 new airports in the next five years.
By 2047, the country aims to have more than 350 airports. Bihar’s new airports will form part of this national expansion.
The project is expected to bring wide benefits. It will boost tourism, support local trade, and generate jobs in new areas.
Air connectivity will give these districts a much-needed development push.
Officials confirmed that Phase I work will start soon. They will announce timelines for each airport site in the coming weeks.
The Bihar-AAI partnership marks a key milestone in reshaping the state’s air infrastructure.
