Several people died in a Russian strike on a grocery store in Kharkiv, eastern Ukraine, said President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday.
“The brutal Russian crime of hitting an ordinary grocery store with a rocket is a completely deliberate terrorist attack. So far, more than 48 people have been reported dead,” Volodymyr Zelensky said in a statement on social media.
Zelensky continued: “Russia needs this and similar terrorist attacks for only one thing: to make its genocidal aggression the new norm for the whole world. Now we are talking with European leaders, in particular, about strengthening our air defence, strengthening our soldiers, and giving our country protection from terror. And we will respond to the terrorists.”
As rescuers worked nearby, Zelensky posted a picture of a woman knelt over a body of someone who was ostensibly killed in the strike, with other corpses scattered all around her.
According to sources, Ukraine’s intelligence agencies think the timing of the attack was intentional because the targets were probably going to be packed with people. In the past, suspects believed to be spying for Russia and aiding in the identification of targets for maximum horror effect have frequently been apprehended by Kyiv’s security service in past.
