Comedian Kapil Sharma’s newly opened Kap’s Cafe in Surrey, British Columbia, came under attack on Wednesday night after unidentified assailants opened fire at the restaurant and nearby buildings.
According to media reports, no injuries were reported, but the incident triggered safety concerns among residents and the Indian diaspora.
Khalistani terrorist Harjeet Singh Laddi has claimed responsibility for the shooting. Laddi is among India’s most wanted terrorists, designated by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for his links to the banned terror outfit Babbar Khalsa International (BKI).
Videos of the attack surfaced on social media, showing a man sitting in a car firing multiple shots at the cafe window. The bullets left visible marks on the restaurant and adjacent structures.
The Surrey Police confirmed the incident, stating that the area was sealed off, CCTV footage is being scanned, and bullet casings have been recovered from the scene. Further investigation is currently underway.
While the exact motive remains unclear, some reports suggest that Laddi was upset over a past comment made by Kapil Sharma, which he allegedly found offensive.
The restaurant was inaugurated last week and has quickly become a popular spot among the Indian diaspora in Canada. The attack has raised concerns about the security of Indian establishments abroad, especially in light of rising threats from extremist elements.
