A resourceful homeless woman made her home out of the rooftop sign of a Family Fare grocery store for almost a year. According to USA Today, a contractor made startling discovery when he noticed an extension line going to the roof.
The woman, 34, who asked to stay nameless, had made the area behind the sign into a cozy retreat. Police discovered carpeting, a small desk, and even amenities like a computer and coffee maker within the tiny room, however they were unaware of how she had gotten inside.
The woman had, astonishingly, managed to draw power from the store’s electricity supply. She chose this unusual living arrangement even though she had a job. The woman was found, but she consented to leave the area and no charges were brought.
She graciously declined the officer Brennon Warren’s offer to provide her with information on nearby homeless shelters. Spartan Nash, the parent company of Family Fare, conveyed their sympathy for the circumstances and emphasized the need of affordable housing as a whole.
According to Brennon Warren, a spokesman for the Midland Police Department, the woman was found living in the sign on April 23 by contractors working on the roof of a Family Fare Supermarket in Midland, USA Today.
“(The contractors) had seen an extension cord leading from one of the rooftop units to this particular sign where she had been living,” according to Warren.
Warren stated that the Family Fare sign residing in the woman’s home “isn’t a normal sign” and differs from those found “on the side of Target or Walmart.” The officer stated that the sign is located inside a hollow peak, measuring 10 to 15 feet, at the top of the supermarket’s roof. Behind the sign is a 3 by 4-foot access door.
