The security forces stopped a mob that attacked the Indian Reserve Battalion (IRB) in Manipur in order to rob its weapons and equipment. One member from mob died as a result of the clash.
Several mob members moved to the the IRB station in the Thoubal district of Manipur, where the event occurred.
“An attempt to loot weapons from an India Reserve Battalion at Khangabok in Thoubal district of Manipur was successfully thwarted by security forces today. One rioter was killed while a few others were injured during the failed attempt,” the Army said.
“The mob had laid road blocks to prevent the movement of reinforcements. However, additional columns of the Assam Rifles and Rapid Action Force were able to induct and the situation was brought under control by the synergised efforts of security forces,” it added.
In a statement, the Indian Army claimed that the mob blocked roads so that the forces couldn’t move. The Assam Rifles and the Rapid Action Force, however, quickly took control of the situation.
The state police cited in a statement on Monday that there were tense situations and sporadic acts of violence in several areas of Manipur. As the violence continues unabatedly, around 118 checkpoints have been set up and 326 individuals have been detained throughout the state.
Since May 3, when an All Tribal Students Union of Manipur (ATSUM) Kuki solidarity march protesting the Meitei community’s demand for a Scheduled Tribe state took a violent turn, there have been several clashes in Manipur.
