Income Tax Department Sends Congress Rs 1,800 Crore Tax Notice, Opposition Accuses BJP Of ‘Tax Terrorism’

Party treasurer Ajay Maken claimed that the BJP is seriously breaking income tax laws during a press conference held at the Congress headquarters.

The Income Tax Department sent the Congress a notice worth over Rs 1,800 crore on Friday, only hours after the Delhi High Court denied the party’s appeals against the tax reassessment process.

Penalty and interest were included in the notice that was delivered for the assessment years 2017–18 and 2020–21.

In addition to denying receiving the Rs. 1,823.08 crore tax notice, the Congress charged that the BJP was engaging in “tax terrorism” in an attempt to financially destroy the opposition party before the Lok Sabha elections.

Party treasurer Ajay Maken claimed that the BJP is seriously breaking income tax laws during a press conference held at the Congress headquarters with Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh. He stated that the Income Tax Department ought to demand more than Rs 4,600 crore from the saffron party for these violations.

Ramesh claimed that the BJP had obtained Rs 8,200 crore through the “electoral bonds scam” and that it had done so by using “pre-paid, post-paid, post-raid bribes and shell companies”.

However, he said that the BJP was involved in “tax terrorism”.

Ramesh said, “Efforts are being made to financially cripple the Congress, but we are not going to be cowed down.”

He declared that Congress would carry out its campaign for the next Lok Sabha elections and that the party would honor its pledges to the citizens of the nation.

The former Union minister said, “We will not be scared of these notices. We will be more aggressive and fight these polls.”

Maken claimed that the Income Tax Department, which he referred to be the BJP’s “frontal organisation”, is deliberately targeting the Congress and other opposition parties with similar views.

He added that the Income Tax Department’s reopening of old returns on bogus grounds is part of a planned, malicious effort against Congress.

Maken stated that the Congress will shortly petition the Supreme Court on the demands made on it by the Income Tax Department.
