A Kanpur woman has lodged a police complaint, alleging that her husband, upon discovering that she had her eyebrows shaped, pronounced triple talaq over the phone from Saudi Arabia.
Gulsaiba, the woman, wed Salim in January 2022. Salim works for a Saudi company.
Gulsaiba told the police that her in-laws started pressuring her for dowry on August 30, 2023, the day her husband departed for Saudi Arabia. She also objected to her husband’s clothing choices and told the police that he was “old fashioned.”
Gulsaiba said that on October 4, her husband initiated a video call during which he noticed her newly shaped eyebrows. He questioned her about it, and despite her explanations that she got her eyebrow shaped because she felt her face did not look good with unruly hair, he became angry.
As per Gulsaiba, Salim threatened her and said, “You went ahead and shaped your eyebrows despite my objections. From today, I free you from this marriage,” and pronounced talaq three times over the video call. Afterwards, he disconnected the call and did not answer further attempts at communication, said Gulsaiba.
A case was registered against the accused on the victim’s complaint.
Gulsaiba stated, “I had been married for only a year. My husband, who had previously disrespected me, has now given me triple talaq. I want the police to take appropriate action against him.”
