Acharya Pramod Krishnam, the head of Kalki Dham and a former Congress leader, has once again triggered political controversy by claiming that an ‘internal emergency’ continues to plague the Congress Party.
His strong remarks have drawn considerable attention on social media and mainstream news platforms.
During a press conference, Acharya Krishnam remarked, “Indira Gandhi declared an emergency fifty years ago. That ended in 1977. But the internal emergency within Congress has never been lifted.”
His statement has led to renewed scrutiny of the party’s internal decision-making structure.
Criticism of the Congress Working Committee (CWC)
Krishnam expressed concern over what he sees as a lack of internal democracy.
He alleged that even senior members of the Congress Working Committee (CWC) are not free to express their views during meetings. “Ask the CWC members whether they’ve been able to speak their minds freely in the last ten years,” he said. “Many want to fly, but their wings have been clipped.”
His comments have fuelled a fresh round of political commentary, with the video of his statement going viral across social media platforms.
Background of expulsion
Acharya Krishnam’s recent statements follow his expulsion from the Congress Party in February 2024.
The party cited indiscipline and anti-party remarks as grounds for his removal.
At the time, he had publicly praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the consecration of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya—a ceremony the Congress distanced itself from.
Party leaders viewed this praise as a breach of discipline, sparking sharp internal disagreement. Since his expulsion, Krishnam has continued to voice his criticism, keeping himself in the public spotlight.
Ongoing dissent against leadership
Without naming anyone directly, Krishnam also criticised the party’s leadership, implying that Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge have failed to bring about meaningful change.
“Instead of reform, the party continues on its old, worn-out path,” he observed, reinforcing the view that the Congress remains resistant to transformation.
This is not the first time Krishnam has taken aim at Rahul Gandhi.
In an earlier statement, he had offered a pointed metaphor, saying, “A horse—whether limping or strong—will eventually grow old. But the horse that once carried you as a child deserves respect, just as one would honour a father in Indian tradition.”
Acharya Pramod Krishnam’s remarks have once again highlighted internal tensions within the Congress.
As the party continues to navigate leadership challenges and prepare for upcoming elections, dissenting voices like his may continue to shape the political narrative in the months ahead.
