On Saturday, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh made comments about defending elected state governments’ rights against “assaults” by the central government was a strong indication of party supporting the Aam Aadmi Party’s opposition against the Delhi ordinance brought by Centre.
At a press conference on Saturday, Ramesh said, “The Congress Party has always opposed any attack on the federal structure of the elected governments in the states and it will continue to do so. Both inside, as well as outside the Parliament.”
Congress, which avoided addressing the Delhi ordinance issue, gave the statement in the midst of an ongoing dispute with the Arvind Kejriwal-led party.
In order to participate in upcoming gatherings of opposition parties, the AAP has been asking clarification from the Congress Party.
According to reports, Congress may now support AAP on ordinance issue. The senior leadership of the Congress met on Saturday to discuss several issues that will be brought up during the next Monsoon Session of Parliament.
Jairam Ramesh, the Congress general secretary in charge of communications, responded that the party has consistently opposed the Modi government’s actions that violated the constitutional rights of elected state governments and local bodies when asked about discussions on the ordinance issue and whether the Congress would oppose the associated bill in Parliament.
Supreme Court handed control of services in Delhi to Elected government, days after Centre brought an ordinance to take over the power, following which Arvind Kejriwal met non BJP parties from across the country to oppose the ordinance which otherwise destroy the federal structure of the nation.
