An accident victim’s remains were thrown into a canal by police in the Muzaffarpur district of Bihar, as per a video that went viral on social media. A bystander captured the video in which the police was seen pushing a package into the canal with their batons.
Following the widespread circulation of the video, action was taken against the officers.
“This incident is shocking and we have suspended the driver constable and terminated the contract of two Home Guard jawans on duty,” said Rakesh Kumar, a Senior Superintendent of Police in Muzaffarpur.
A senior police officer who admitted the mistake claimed that only the body parts that could not be salvaged were dumped in the canal.
“It was a very bad accident and all the body parts could not be retrieved. This is why the police had disposed them in the canal,” said a senior police officer.
He acknowledged that it was an inhumane act after being called out on it. “The parts that could be salvaged were sent for postmortem… The man is yet to be identified,” he said.
He continued, “The body has now been removed from the canal and is being kept in the mortuary.
