Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Papua New Guinea colleague James Marape released the Tamil classic ‘Thirukkural’ in the Tok Pisin language on Monday to bring Indian thinking and culture closer to the people of this southwestern Pacific nation.

Modi landed in Papua New Guinea on Sunday, becoming the first Indian prime leader to visit the country. He co-hosted an important summit between India and 14 Pacific island nations to strengthen bilateral ties with Marape.

Papua New Guinea’s official language is Tok Pisin.

Closer to diversity

The book, co-authored by Subha Sasindran and West New Britain Province Governor Sasindran Muthuvel, is supposed to bring Indian thinking and culture closer to the people of Papua New Guinea.

“In Papua New Guinea, Prime Minister James Marape and I had the honour of releasing the Thirukkural in Tok Pisin.” Thirukkural is a famous classic that provides significant insights into a variety of issues,” Prime Minister Modi said on Twitter.

Poet Thiruvalluvar wrote Thirukkural, a collection of couplets about ethics, politics, and economics, as well as love.

“I’d like to thank the Governor of West New Britain Province @pngsasi and Mrs Subha Sasindran for their efforts in translating the Thirukkural into Tok Pisin.” Governor Sasindran attended school in Tamil, and Mrs Subha Sasindran is a well-known linguist,” he added in another tweet.

A translation of the book in Gujarati, the prime minister’s native language, was previously published.

On numerous times, he has exalted Thirukkural.

Words of wisdom

In one of his remarks, the prime minister claimed that Thirukkural was not only a literary masterpiece but also a remarkable manual for everyday life. It illuminates the righteous road before us and motivates us to live a life of selflessness.

He added that Thirukkural “remains relevant even today and can serve as an inspiration for the present generation.”
