The Congress Party launched widespread protests across the country on Wednesday, criticizing the Central government and investigative agencies after the Enforcement Directorate (ED) filed a chargesheet against party leaders Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi in connection with the National Herald case.
Demonstrations took place in multiple states, with senior Congress leaders leading the charge.
In Delhi, tensions escalated when several Congress members were detained by the police while attempting to move past barricades near the party’s headquarters.
Congress Slams ED Move As ‘Politically Driven’
Congress leader Amit Chavda denounced the ED’s move, calling it politically driven and an attempt to divert attention from key national concerns.
Chavda told reporters, “This is being done to distract the people from real issues and to threaten the opposition. Institutions like the ED and CBI are being misused to suppress dissent.”
Echoing similar concerns, Congress MP Imran Pratapgarhi further suggested the timing of the chargesheet was linked to the political landscape.
He accused the BJP of using federal agencies to pressure the opposition ahead of elections.
“The agency through which the fight has been taken to the court has the intention only to harass the Opposition. A session is held in Gujarat; Rahul Gandhi reaches Modasa, and here, a chargesheet is filed. You understand the chronology. In the wake of the upcoming Bihar elections, Congress’ activity in Gujarat, its possible defeat in the upcoming Assam elections and the alertness of the opposition, the BJP wants to crush the opposition completely. But BJP forgets that this is Gandhi family which has numerous sacrifices for the country. Congress is protesting across the country,” MP Imran Pratapgarhi further noted.
Case Is Meant To Suppress Opposition: Sachin Pilot
Congress leader Sachin Pilot also weighed in, labeling the case as politically motivated.
“This is a politically motivated case. We have faith in the judicial system. We will fight it out legally. Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi have been purposefully targeted. This has been done to suppress the voice of the opposition,” he remarked.
The ED filed the prosecution complaint in Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court on Tuesday against Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Sam Pitroda, Suman Dubey, and several others, including companies tied to the case.
Meanwhile, the matter is scheduled for arguments on cognizance on 25 April.
In response, Congress, however, announced a series of protests outside ED offices at district headquarters across states on Wednesday. The party is targeting what it called the misuse of power by the BJP-led central government.
The complaint that sparked the investigation was originally filed by BJP leader Subramanian Swamy against the Gandhis, their associated firms, and others.
