The American labor movement of the late 19th century is where International Labor Day was first celebrated. The exact date of May 1st was selected to honor the nation-wide eight-hour working strike that started on that day in 1886. But this crucial occasion resulted in the terrible Haymarket Affair in Chicago, where a labor demonstration turned violent. Seven police officers and at least four civilians were killed in a bomb explosion.

The Haymarket Affair, a significant occasion in Labor Day history, took place in Chicago in 1886. That year, laborers peacefully protested for an eight-hour workday in Haymarket Square on May 1. However, after a device went off, the demonstration grew violent and both demonstrators and police officers were hurt.

Although the origins of International Labor Day may be traced back to the remembrance of the Haymarket affair in Chicago. Labor Day is observed on the first Monday in September rather than May 1 in Canada and the USA.
