The southernmost region of the Moon, where India’s Chandrayaan-3 mission’s Vikram lander touched down on Wednesday, has reportedly been captured by American astronomer Andrew McCarthy. Mr. McCarthy posted the detailed image of the Moon on X (formerly Twitter), providing a glimpse into the challenging lunar landscape where the Lander made its historic landing.
“I captured the photo of the southernmost portion of the moon tonight. This is where the Vikram lander touched down on Wednesday. This is about as detailed as I can get using my telescope,” Mr McCarthy wrote.
The image was posted by the astrophotographer on Friday, and since then it has received more than 176,000 views and close to 5,000 likes. Some users in the comment section referred to the image as “brilliant,” while others described it as “impressive.”
“Nice shot! demonstrates how challenging landing on this portion is! Thanks, @Isro,” one user commented. “Always captivating. See those crater-like depressions? Nature never stops repeating itself. Stunning image. Congratulations!” said another.
Mind blowing image, said a third user, while another added, “That’s amazing. I mistook it for a lunar orbital photograph.
India’s robots Vikram and Pragyan shared a selfie video of themselves taken on the moon’s surface as part of Indian Space Research Organization’s (ISRO) own treat. As the Pragyan rover was moving slowly, Chandrayaan-3 lander Vikram captured images and a video of its ramp. The ISRO tweeted a link to the video along with the caption, “… and here is how the Chandrayaan-3 Rover ramped down from the Lander to the Lunar surface.”
