The rate of population growth in the world is alarming, exceeding expectations every day. Contrary to earlier estimates, a new analysis contends that the world’s population may only peak in 2050 at 9 billion people.
If current trends continue, the world’s population, which is currently 7.96 billion, will reach an all-time high of 8.6 billion in the middle of the century before declining by nearly 2 billion before the century’s end, according to a report by Live Science.
In the second scenario, called the Giant Leap, researchers predict that the birthrate achieves a whole peak of 8,5 billion people by almost 2040 but then decline by 6 billion people by the end of the century.
The statement continued that this is accomplished through extraordinary policy changes regarding food and energy security, inequality, and gender equity in addition to previously unheard-of investments in poverty alleviation, particularly in the areas of education and health. In this scenario, extreme poverty is erased within a generation (by 2060), having a significant effect on the trends in the world population.
The authors contend that other well-known population projections frequently minimize the significance of rapid economic growth.
“We know rapid economic development in low-income countries has a huge impact on fertility rates. Fertility rates fall as girls get access to education and women are economically empowered and have access to better healthcare,” said Per Espen Stoknes, Earth4All project lead, and director of the Centre for Sustainability at the Norwegian Business School.
Only a few well-known models simulate both population growth and economic development simultaneously. comments Beniamino Callegari, an associate professor from Kristiania and a member of the Earth for all modeling team.
