Gautam Adani Hails Puri Lifeguards As Unsung Heroes During Rath Yatra Visit

Lifeguards stationed at Puri beach in Odisha expressed overwhelming joy and pride on Saturday as Gautam Adani, Chairman of the Adani Group, visited the holy city during the annual Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath.

The lifeguards, who play a crucial role in ensuring the safety of lakhs of pilgrims each year, hailed the moment as deeply meaningful.

Mani Shiv Rao, President of the Puri Lifeguard Association, shared his emotions, saying, “We felt truly honoured and extremely happy with Gautam Adani’s visit. This is the first time such a prominent figure has come to meet us and spoken directly. We are truly delighted.”

A rare recognition for lifesaving work

Hari Rao, General Secretary of the association, echoed the sentiment.

“When Gautam Adani came to meet us, it filled us with pride. His direct engagement means a lot to all of us. We serve the pilgrims selflessly, and his presence made us feel seen and valued,” he said.

The Adani Group has also launched a comprehensive volunteer initiative to support the Rath Yatra, which runs from 26 June to 8 July.

The programme is designed to assist both pilgrims and frontline workers, with a special focus on beach safety and cleanliness.

As part of the campaign, the group has extended support to lifeguards and volunteers involved in beach cleaning, particularly targeting plastic waste.

They have distributed free T-shirts to official volunteers and fluorescent safety vests to municipal workers engaged in sanitation efforts.

Over 450 emergencies handled so far

Lifeguards have already handled over 450 medical emergencies during the ongoing festival.

“Every day, we serve thousands of pilgrims coming for the Rath Yatra,” said one team member. “Our teams work tirelessly from early morning, maintaining cleanliness around the beach and temple area and ensuring readiness for the day’s crowd.”

He added, “From lighting and road management to health and security, we contribute behind the scenes to ensure the event runs smoothly.”

Among those on the frontline is Lifeguard Commander M Jogie Rao, who described the team’s work as a service to humanity.

“We are here from sunrise to sunset, saving lives. Each time we rescue someone from drowning, it fills our hearts with purpose. That moment is our true reward. We don’t do this for recognition; we do it out of commitment to humanity.”

Further, as the Rath Yatra continues to draw crowds in the lakhs, the quiet dedication of Puri’s lifeguards—now recognised by one of India’s leading industrialists—shines as a story of service, sacrifice, and silent heroism.
