UP Police Recovers Cash Worth Up To Rs 5 Crore From Buried Drums In Prayagraj; Four Detained

Uttar Pradesh Police recovered cash estimated at Rs 4-5 crore from three drums buried inside a house in Prayagraj district. Police detained four people as they investigate the source of the money.

The recovery took place late Wednesday in Baraipur Ramnagar village, under the Nawabganj police station area. Acting on a tip-off about suspected stolen money, teams from the Nawabganj and Soraon police stations searched the house of Rakesh Yadav.

During the search, officers excavated parts of the property and discovered three buried drums containing bundles of Rs 500 notes.

Police seized and sealed the cash and informed the relevant departments, including the Income Tax Department. Officials said they would determine the exact amount after counting the money.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Gangapar) Sonam Kumar confirmed the recovery. He said investigators were examining the source of the cash and would take further legal action based on their findings.

Police are questioning four people, including Rakesh Yadav. Investigators are examining whether the money was brought from Pune, where Rakesh’s brother, Bablu Yadav, reportedly lived for several years before returning to the village during the 2020 Covid-19 lockdown.

Two of Bablu’s brothers-in-law reportedly accompanied him. However, police have not established any link between their movements and the recovered cash.

Investigators are examining a reported family dispute that occurred a few days before the recovery. They have not confirmed any connection between the dispute and the buried money.

Villagers told police that Rakesh had acquired considerable property in recent years. He reportedly purchased several bighas of land, built a house worth around Rs 1.5 crore and bought two tractors and a DJ system.

Police are investigating his assets and financial transactions to establish the source of the cash.
