Sensex ended higher on Thursday, snapping their recent losing streak as strong buying in FMCG, realty and public sector banking stocks lifted investor sentiment.
The Sensex surged 905.01 points, or 1.24 per cent, to close at 74,151. The Nifty climbed 237.90 points, or 1.05 per cent, to settle at 22,936.75.
Market analysts said the Nifty had reclaimed its 20-day moving average (20-DMA). A breakout from the recent consolidation pattern on the daily chart further strengthened its technical outlook.
Although 23,000 remains an immediate resistance level, analysts see the potential for the index to move towards its previous swing high of 23,175.
They said the short-term outlook would remain positive as long as the Nifty holds above its 20-DMA and the key support level of 22,800.
Realty and FMCG stocks led the sectoral rally. The Nifty Realty index rose 2.75 per cent, while the Nifty FMCG index gained 2.34 per cent. The Nifty PSU Bank index advanced 2.20 per cent on strong buying interest.
Auto stocks bucked the broader trend. The Nifty Auto index declined 0.24 per cent, making it one of the few sectoral indices to end in negative territory.
Broader markets extended their gains, reflecting positive market breadth. The Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 indices rose nearly 1 per cent each.
Meanwhile, the rupee traded marginally higher by around 0.04 per cent at 95.25 following the US Federal Reserve’s decision to keep interest rates unchanged at 3.75–4 per cent.
Analysts expect the rupee to remain range-bound in the near term, with a projected trading range of 94.75–95.75.
