At a ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi on Saturday, President Droupadi Murmu conferred the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Bharat Ratna, posthumously, on former prime ministers P V Narasimha Rao and Chaudhary Charan Singh, agriculture scientist M S Swaminathan, and two-time former chief minister of Bihar, Karpoori Thakur.
The relatives of Rao, Singh, Thakur, and Swaminathan accepted their awards. The president presented the honor to P V Prabhakar Rao, the son of the late Prime Minister Rao.
Murmu presented the award to Jayant Chaudhary, the president of the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and the grandson of Singh.
The president presented the honor to Nitya Rao, the daughter of Swaminathan, and Ram Nath Thakur, the son of Thakur.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, and other dignitaries attended the event.
This year, the government has announced five Bharat Ratna awards, one of which will go to L K Advani, a former deputy prime minister and BJP leader.
