On Saturday, the Centre will set up a peace committee in the leadership of Governor Anusuiya Uikey with CM N Biren Singh as its member in Manipur to establish peace among different ethnic groups of the state through negotiation.
The peace committee, which was announced by Home Minister on June 1 in Imphal as a measures to put an end to the ethnic violence in Manipur and quickly restore peace, is to facilitate the process of establishing peace between the state’s various ethnic groups through dialogue and negotiations. The home ministry stated in a press release on Saturday that “the committee should strengthen social cohesiveness, mutual understanding, and facilitate cordial communication between various ethnic groups.”
The peace committee will be headed by the governor of Manipur, but it will also include MPs, MLAs, and leaders from other political parties in the state, as well as a few ministers in the state government. The board will also have former civil servants, educationists, litterateurs, artists and representative of different ethnic groups as its member.
After Amit Shah’s visit to Manipur a CBI investigation was conducted and a Rs 101.8 crore assistance package was given to the affected families. A judicial panel has been established to investigate the violence. Ajai Lamba, a retired chief judge of the Gawahati High Court, is leading the three-person judicial panel, which arrived in Imphal on Saturday. The other members, Aloka Prabhakar, a retired IPS officer, and Himanshu Sekhar Das, a former bureaucrat, were with Lamba.
“As soon as possible but no later than six months from the date of its first sitting,” is when the commission must provide its report to the Centre. The main task of the committee is to find the reasons behind the escalation of ethnic violence and riots targeting members of different communities.
