Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah Launches ‘Shakti’ Free Travel Scheme For Women-Transgenders Regardless Of Socioeconomic Status

Siddaramaiah, the chief minister of Karnataka, announced the ambitious ‘Shakti’ free travel scheme for women on Sunday, saying it will enhance women’s presence in public life and empower them.

The scheme open for women and transgenders

The programme enables women and transgender people to ride for free in government buses throughout Karnataka, regardless of their age or socioeconomic status. The kind of buses that are permitted, meanwhile, are limited. CM said, . “Women and transgenders irrespective of caste, religion and age – the scheme covers even students – are eligible for the free bus travel.”

Scheme will benefit 42 lakh female travellers

In addition to 3,892 NWKRTC and 3,376 KKRTC buses, 5,102 out of 5,548 BMTC buses and 6,239 out of 7,482 KSRTC buses will have this facility for women, according to KSRTC officials. They claimed that every day, on average, the scheme will benefit 42 lakh female travellers. 50% of the 6.5 crore people in the state are women and out of which 90% use buses will be benefitted from this scheme, according to Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy.
