GST Bachat Utsav Brings Relief To Artisans & Boosts India’s Cultural Economy

The GST Bachat Utsav, which began on 22 September, marks a major milestone in the Modi government’s ongoing efforts to simplify taxation and boost India’s domestic economy.

The event celebrates the implementation of next-generation GST reforms, designed to bring tangible benefits to both producers and consumers.

The latest tax revisions particularly focus on the handicrafts sector, a crucial contributor to India’s cultural and rural economy.

With reduced GST rates, artisans and small traders across the country are experiencing a renewed sense of optimism.

Under the revised structure, the GST on statues made of wood, stone, and metal has been slashed from 12% to 5%, significantly reducing the cost of traditional artefacts.

This change also extends to paintings, handcrafted candles, wooden carvings, and terracotta kitchenware, ensuring that a wide range of products are now more affordable for consumers.

Officials say the tax cuts are not just a financial relief but a cultural revival initiative, aimed at supporting local artisans and encouraging citizens to purchase indigenous products.

By making handicrafts more accessible, the government seeks to strengthen the bond between India’s cultural heritage and modern consumer markets.

Empowering Rural Artisans and Traders

The government has also reduced the GST on cotton and jute handbags and shopping bags from 12% to 5%.

The move boosts the eco-friendly handicrafts industry and supports rural women’s self-help groups that rely on traditional weaving and craftsmanship for their livelihoods.

Through these measures, the government aims to create sustainable employment opportunities in villages and small towns while promoting environmentally responsible alternatives to synthetic goods.

The GST 2.0 rationalisation is a vital step towards building a more inclusive and competitive handicrafts market.

By making traditional products more affordable, India’s artisans can now tap into both domestic and international markets.

Experts believe this reform will enhance the global competitiveness of Indian handicrafts, ensuring that centuries-old traditions continue to thrive in the modern economy.

The government’s initiative reflects a broader vision of combining economic growth with cultural preservation, creating a future where India’s heritage and entrepreneurship go hand in hand.
