PM Modi Highlights Northeast As India’s ‘Forward Face’ Of Growth & Connectivity

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the progress and integration of the Northeast, declaring that the region is no longer just India’s frontier but its forward face.

His remarks came in response to an article by Union Minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia, who detailed his recent visit to Assam and Meghalaya, praising the resilience and warmth of the people of the region.

PM Modi posted on X, “In this insightful article, Union Minister JM Scindia shares his experience of visiting the North East, describing its beauty and the indomitable spirit of its people. Highlighting the North East as ‘Ashtalakshmi’, the Minister explains how it is becoming India’s natural gateway to Southeast Asia. He emphasises that the North East is not just India’s frontier — it is now its forward face.”

Scindia’s Reflections on Transformation

Minister Scindia wrote that his visit to the region left him ‘deeply moved and profoundly inspired’.

Describing the Northeast as a land of breathtaking beauty and boundless spirit, he said he returned with ‘renewed resolve to work even harder and with greater rigour for the region’s progress and prosperity’.

He also credited Prime Minister Modi’s leadership for transforming the Northeast into a vibrant centre of connectivity, culture, and commerce.

“Had it not been for his farsighted vision and ability to turn challenges into opportunities, this resurgence of hope and possibility might still have remained a distant dream,” Scindia noted.

Highlighting the rapid progress in infrastructure, Scindia observed that the region is evolving from being landlocked to land-linked, symbolising a powerful shift towards inclusivity and opportunity.

“One can feel the pulse of transformation where development walks hand in hand with dignity,” he remarked.

He also emphasised that as connectivity deepens, the Northeast is becoming India’s natural gateway to Southeast Asia — a critical pillar of the country’s Act East Policy.

Empowering Rural Livelihoods

During his visit, Scindia toured the Mushroom Development Centre in Upper Shillong, Meghalaya — a facility that represents a unique blend of science, community participation, and entrepreneurship.

Established in 1982 under the North Eastern Council, the centre now houses the newly set up Shiitake Mushroom Production and Training Centre, which produces nearly 1.5 lakh sawdust blocks annually.

Each block yields up to one kilogram of high-value shiitake mushrooms, fetching about ₹1,000 in the market.

“What stayed with me were the faces and stories of the farmers,” Scindia said.

“Their eyes gleamed with pride as they spoke about how this initiative creates dignified livelihoods, nurtures green entrepreneurship, and builds a truly Atmanirbhar Northeast envisioned by the Prime Minister.”

Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, the Northeast further continues to emerge as a cornerstone of India’s growth narrative — a region where culture, commerce, and community thrive in harmony.

The government’s focus on connectivity, inclusivity, and self-reliance is setting the stage for a new era of opportunity and optimism across the eight Northeastern states.
