Hearing On Petition Demanding Removal Of Socialism And Secular From Constitution’s Preamble To Be Held In July

During the hearing on the petition demanding removal of the words socialism and secular from the Preamble of the Constitution, the Supreme Court said that there are many cases filed today. There is paucity of time, hence hearing is not possible today. On this matter, the Supreme Court said is the petition will be heard in July. This petition has been filed on behalf of BJP leaders Subramanian Swamy and Balram Singh.

In the petition, the legality of adding the words socialism and secular in the Preamble of the Constitution through the 42nd Constitutional Amendment in 1976 during the time of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi has been challenged. It has been said that adding these words in the Preamble is beyond the power of Parliament to amend the Constitution under Article 368.
