Secular

On Wednesday, UP CM Yogi Adityanath accused opposition parties of hypocrisy, claiming they undermined the Constitution while in power.

On Monday, the Supreme Court rejected petitions challenging the inclusion of 'Socialist' and 'Secular' in the Indian Constitution's Preamble.

These words were added during the 42nd Amendment in 1976, under the tenure of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Petitioners Balram Singh, Subramanian Swamy, and Ashwini Kumar Upadhyay have termed the addition unconstitutional and demanded its removal

'The petitioner’s arguments cannot override the constitutional rights of AIMIM members. This petition has no merit and stands dismissed,' said Justice Jalan.

In the petition, the legality of adding the words socialism and secular in the Preamble of the Constitution through the 42nd Constitutional Amendment in 1976 during the time of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi has been challenged.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar had rejected the incorporation of these words, asserting that the Constitution should not impose specific political ideologies on citizens.
