A Department-related Parliamentary Standing Committee will visit Pahalgam to assess the aftermath of the terror attack that killed 26 people and to review the official response on the ground.
This will be the first such visit by a Parliamentary delegation since the attack.
The committee, which pertains to Coal, Mines, and Steel, is chaired by senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Anurag Thakur.
The broader tour, part of its field study, includes scheduled stops in Mumbai, Coorg, and various parts of Jammu & Kashmir, including Pahalgam.
Meetings & shrine visit in Jammu
The Jammu leg of the visit will involve preliminary meetings with senior administrative officials.
The committee aims to understand both the security preparedness and the development challenges faced by the region.
During their stay in Jammu, members are also likely to visit the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, a prominent pilgrimage site, before boarding the Vande Bharat Express for Srinagar.
In Srinagar, the committee will engage in detailed deliberations on regional development, the impact of recent terror incidents on local livelihoods, and measures required to restore normalcy and boost tourism.
These discussions will include local officials and security personnel.
Following their engagements in Srinagar, the delegation will proceed to Pahalgam to visit the Baisaran Valley—the exact site where the recent terror attack occurred.
The incident sent shockwaves across the country, as attackers reportedly asked victims for their names before targeting them, highlighting the communal intent behind the killings.
The Parliamentary delegation aims to demonstrate oversight, express solidarity with the victims, and push for stronger preventive measures through this high-profile visit.
It underscores the Centre’s focus on ensuring national security while sustaining tourism and development in the Union Territory.
To facilitate the committee’s visit, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has designated SP Rukwal, Director of Geology and Mining, as the official coordinator.
The administration appointed SP Rukwal to coordinate logistics and facilitate the Parliamentary delegation’s meetings and movements.
The committee aims to highlight ground realities in Pahalgam and influence further security and development measures in the region.
