Socialism

During the hearing, Justice Khanna asked the petitioner’s lawyer, Vishnu Shankar Jain, 'Don’t you want India to remain secular?'

In the petition, the legality of adding the words socialism and secular in the Preamble of the Constitution through the 42nd Constitutional Amendment in 1976 during the time of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi has been challenged.

Dr. B.R. Ambedkar had rejected the incorporation of these words, asserting that the Constitution should not impose specific political ideologies on citizens.
