Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Saturday said India had secured the deportation of Navpreet Singh from Türkiye and described the development as a ‘historic milestone’ for the PM Modi government.
In a post on X, Shah alleged that Singh had obtained Turkish citizenship using the fake identity of Navab Virk and continued to smuggle heroin and methamphetamine from Afghanistan to India.
Shah said Indian agencies tracked Singh, established his identity and secured his deportation. He added that Singh had been brought back to India and placed behind bars in connection with drug trafficking and other cases against him. Shah also congratulated the agencies involved in the operation.

The Home Minister further reiterated the government’s stated commitment to tackling international drug trafficking and said it aimed to act against narco-cartels by December 2029.
The development follows other cases involving the return of alleged drug traffickers. In April, authorities brought Mohammad Salim Dola back from Türkiye, while Delhi Police and the CBI returned fugitive Prabhdeep Singh from Azerbaijan in May in a case involving 358 kg of heroin. Investigators alleged that Prabhdeep managed operations in India for Navpreet Singh.
India and Türkiye signed an extradition treaty in 2001, which came into force in June 2002. The agreement provides a framework for seeking the transfer of fugitives wanted in serious criminal cases.
The developments form part of India’s broader efforts to locate and bring back fugitives involved in narcotics and organised crime through cooperation with foreign authorities and international agencies.
