Prosecutor Seeks Eight-Year Prison Sentence For Shakira In Connection With An Tax Fraud

A Spanish court announced on Thursday that it has opened a new investigation into Colombian artist Shakira in connection with alleged income and wealth tax in 2018.

In its statement, the court in the northeastern town of Esplugues de Llobregat, near Barcelona, did not disclose any other information.

The ‘Hips Don’t Lie’ singer, 46, is scheduled to go on trial at the end of the year in another case involving more than 14.5 million euros ($14.31 million) in back taxes owed between 2012 and 2014.

The prosecutor is seeking up to an eight-year in prison for the star, whose full name is Shakira Isabel Mebarak.

A request for comment on the new case was not immediately returned by the prosecutor. The legal team of Shakira stated that they would respond later in the day.
