The significance of the festival stems from its association with the event recounted in the Bhagavata Puran. In addition to sweets, dal, vegetables, pulses, and fried savoury items are offered to Lord Krishna during the puja.

Govardhan Puja is a major Hindu festival that is enthusiastically and celebrated in honour of Lord Krishna. It will be observed on November 14, 2023, this year, and is very dear to Vaishnavas.

The significance of the festival stems from its association with the event recounted in the Bhagavata Puran. It tells the tale of how Lord Krishna raised Govardhan Hill to shield the people of Vrindavan from the never-ending rain.

Drik Panchang states that on November 14, the auspicious Govardhan Puja Pratahkala Muhurat occurs between 6:43 and 8:52 a.m. Pratipada tithi for the puja will start at 2:56 pm on November 13 and will end at 2:36 pm on November 14.

In addition to sweets, dal, vegetables, pulses, and fried savoury items are offered to Lord Krishna during the puja. Devotees gather to sing spiritual hymns known as “thaal,” or kirtans. About an hour of beautiful singing culminates in a grand arti, which is a symbol of respect and devotion.
