An official for the Taliban government in Kabul said on Wednesday that Pakistan’s threat to forcibly expel illegal Afghan immigrants is “unacceptable” and that Afghans are not to blame for Pakistan’s security issues.
Pakistan’s caretaker government on Tuesday issued an ultimatum for the 1.73 million Afghan immigrants who are believed to be living there illegally, until November 1 to leave or face being expelled by force.
“The behaviour of Pakistan towards Afghan refugees is unacceptable,” Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesperson for the Taliban administration in Kabul, said in a post on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.
Sarfraz Bugti, Pakistan’s interior minister, claimed that Afghan nationals were responsible for 14 of the 24 suicide bombings that took place in Pakistan this year in order to help justify the crackdown.
“The Pakistani side should reconsider its plan. Afghan refugees are not involved in Pakistan’s security problems. As long as they leave Pakistan voluntarily, that country should tolerate them,” Mujahid said.
The majority of the immigrants, who have been living in Pakistan for years, were given an ultimatum by Pakistan after civil and military leaders met to discuss the law and order situation in the wake of two suicide bombings on Friday that left at least 57 people dead. According to Bugti, one of the suicide bombers was an Afghan citizen. He also claimed that the Indian intelligence service was complicit.
