Shiv Shakti Vs Jawahar Point: Chandrayaan-3 Touchdown Site Name Causes Ruckus

Modi visited ISRO on Saturday to celebrate Chandrayaan-3’s accomplishments and announced the name for the Chandrayaan-3 touchdown site as “Shiv Shakti Point.

After Prime Minister Narendra Modi referred to Chandrayaan 3’s landing point as “Shiv Shakti Point,” the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress got into a heated spat. Senior Congress leader Rashid Alvi responded to the naming of “Jawahar Point,” the place where Chandrayaan-1 crashed-landed in 2008 and was named after former Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

Alvi found naming a lunar landmark way too absurd. He said, “The entire world will laugh…We have landed, it is very good. We are proud of it, no doubt about it. But we are not the owner of the moon or the point.”

He further mentioned, “, “You can’t compete Jawaharlal Nehru with anything… Pandit Nehru founded all this. But now Modiji is politicising the thing.” The landing spot where the Chandrayaan-1 mission crashed was named as Jawahar point in 2008.

Taking a dig at the Congress leader Rashid Alvi BJP’s national spokesperson, Shehzad Poonawalla said, “Both the names — Shiv Shakti Point and Tiranga Point — are attached to the country. Why does Rashid Alvi find this ridiculous? The Congress has a family-first principle… Vikram lander is named after Vikram Sarabhai.”

Following his journey abroad, Modi visited ISRO on Saturday to celebrate Chandrayaan 3’s accomplishments. He announced three things during his visit, including the names “Shiv Shakti Point” for the Chandrayaan 3 touchdown site, “Tiranga Point” for the Chandrayaan 2 touchdown site, and “August 23” as National Space Day.
