Heat wave in India might hurt economy
Indians be ready to face the harshest days of scorching heat near as the country is predicting heat across swathes of India in the next month, May. This extreme weather condition could strain the power network, affect the economy and even threaten people’s lives.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the monthly maximum temperatures are expected to be above normal over east-central and eastern regions. Several parts of northwest India will also see hotter weather.
Amidst the severe heat conditions, the southern Asian nation has been bracing for a searing summer after record-breaking heat in 2022, this has prevailed widespread suffering and affected global wheat supplies.
What will happen amid a heat wave?
As per the reports, due to the summer season, the use of electricity has been increased. People switch on their air conditioners and fans, piling more pressure on the power grid. Also, this will lead to an increase in the risk of blackout. In a country like India, where millions toil outdoors, many without adequate protection, the heat leads to productivity losses and can even be deadly.
As per the experts, a rise in temperature is not the only factor that can make the heat wave deadly or dangerous. Humidity can also be fatal when the human body can’t cool itself by sweating.
Temperature in Asia
India is far from being the only nation experiencing stifling heat this year. Temperatures in Thailand and Bangladesh have been soaring, while Yunnan province in China is grappling with drought.
The weather agency said that Temperatures are likely to be normal to below normal in parts of northwest and west-central India in May.
Moreover, it added that it is predicted El Nino may develop during the upcoming monsoon season, a weather pattern that is associated with drier conditions and reduced rainfall in India. However, that may be offset by positive Indian Ocean Dipole conditions which are also likely to develop and could bring greater monsoon rainfall.
