Prime Minister Narendra Modi has observed nine-day fasts during Chaitra and Sharadiya Navratri for more than four decades, reportedly continuing the practice for around 47 years. His disciplined routine and energy during fasting often attract public attention, prompting questions about what he consumes during the religious observance.

What Does PM Modi Eat?

In an interview with American podcaster Lex Fridman, Prime Minister Modi discussed his personal fasting practices, addressing social media claims that he survives only on lemon water.

According to the interview, the Prime Minister follows different dietary rules during the two Navratri periods.

During Sharadiya Navratri, observed in autumn, PM Modi abstains from food for all nine days and consumes only warm water. During Chaitra Navratri, celebrated in spring, he follows a different routine, eating just one type of fruit once a day throughout the nine days.

For instance, if he begins with papaya, he continues eating only papaya for the entire fasting period.

How Does He Maintain Energy?

At 76, Prime Minister Modi continues to attend official engagements, international visits, rallies and lengthy meetings during his regular schedule. He has indicated that his body has adapted to his fasting routine over time. He has described heightened senses of taste and smell during fasting.

However, prolonged fasting and restrictive diets may not suit everyone. Health experts caution that sudden dietary restrictions or consuming only water without medical guidance can cause weakness and nutritional deficiencies.

People considering extended fasts or significant dietary changes should consult a qualified healthcare professional before beginning.
