The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved a bill to establish a new Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Guwahati, making it the second IIM in the North East after Shillong and the 22nd across India.
The Centre has allocated over ₹500 crore for the project, senior government officials confirmed.
The new IIM will reinforce Guwahati’s position as a leading education hub in the region, which already hosts premier institutions such as the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati, National Law University and Judicial Academy, and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) at Changsari.
This development will attract talent from across the country and elevate the city’s profile as a centre for higher learning.
Officials noted that the new IIM will address a long-standing gap in management education in the North East. It will offer high-quality programmes and research opportunities, providing students with access to world-class learning and enhancing employability.
The institute will foster entrepreneurship and support capacity-building in sectors critical to both regional and national economic growth.
Expanding Higher Education in the North East
The establishment of the institute aligns with the Centre’s broader strategy to expand higher education infrastructure in the North East.
In recent years, the region has seen the creation of central universities, AIIMS campuses, and specialised research centres.
These initiatives aim to bridge regional disparities in access to top-tier institutions, integrate the North East more closely with national and global economic networks, and create sustainable pathways for talent development.
The new IIM is expected to catalyse local economic growth, attracting students, researchers, and faculty from across India and abroad. Its presence will stimulate innovation and entrepreneurship, create employment opportunities, and contribute to capacity-building in sectors such as technology, industry, and services.
The government will introduce the bill to establish IIM Guwahati in Parliament during the current session.
Once operational, the institute will become a centre of excellence in management education, research, and innovation, further cementing the North East’s role as a key contributor to India’s human capital development.
With this initiative, the government aims to create sustainable educational opportunities, enhance regional integration, and empower students in the North East with world-class management skills.
The project represents a significant step in bridging educational gaps and supporting India’s broader socio-economic development goals.
