Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai will inaugurate the Second National Mediation Conference 2025 in Bhubaneswar on Saturday evening.
He will lead discussions on strengthening mediation practices and adding momentum to this alternative dispute resolution mechanism, according to an official statement.
CJI Gavai will stress that mediation plays a vital role in delivering justice under the Constitution and urged steps to ease court workloads.
Experts note that mediation not only speeds up justice in specific cases but also reduces the burden of litigation on courts.
Union Law and Justice Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan will participate in the two-day conference.
The first edition, held in Delhi in May, saw President Droupadi Murmu launch the Mediation Association of India and stress extending mediation to rural areas.
President Murmu’s Call for Rural Mediation
At the May event, President Murmu urged the extension of the Mediation Act, 2023, to Panchayats to legally empower them in resolving village-level disputes. She said mediation reflects India’s civilisational legacy and contributes to social harmony, which is vital for national strength.
“Mediation can make the judicial system more efficient by unblocking developmental pathways, enhancing both the ease of doing business and the ease of living,” the President had stated. She called mediation a key instrument to achieve the vision of Viksit Bharat by 2047.
The Office of the Advocate General and Odisha’s Law Department is hosting the Second National Mediation Conference at Loka Seva Bhavan, Bhubaneswar.
According to the Advocate General of Odisha, the Attorney General of India, the Solicitor General, the Additional Solicitor Generals, the Advocate Generals of various states, and the Vice Chancellors of National Law Universities will attend. He added that the organisers have also invited trained mediators, heads of insurance companies, public sector undertakings, and semi-government bodies engaged in litigation with private parties.
