The Delhi government has informed the High Court that it has approved the proposal to increase the pecuniary jurisdiction of civil courts from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 20 lakh. Also, the Central Government has been requested to increase the economic appellate jurisdiction of the District Judges in Delhi by amending Section 39(1) of the Punjab Court Act, 1918 on behalf of the Parliament. This information has been filed in the status report by Delhi Government’s Principal Secretary (Law, Justice and Legislative Affairs) Bharat Parashar.
The bench of Acting Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora will hear the next hearing in this case on October 8. Economic jurisdiction refers to the jurisdiction of a court based on the value or amount of a lawsuit.
The bench was hearing the petition of lawyer Amit Sahni, in which a demand has been made to increase the pecuniary jurisdiction of Delhi’s civil courts from Rs 3 lakh to Rs 20 lakh. The petitioner has informed that the decision to increase the limit has already been taken by the High Court on its administrative side, but even after a year, the Center has not yet notified it.
