Mahua Moitra
The Housing Committee of Parliament wrote the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to order TMC leader Mahua Moitra to leave her official bungalow, following her expulsion from the Lok Sabha due to cash-for-query allegations.
On December 8, Moitra was dismissed from the Lok Sabha after the House accepted the Ethics Committee’s report, which found her guilty of accepting gifts and unlawful compensation from a businessman in exchange for being allowed to ask questions in parliament.
As per the motion, Trinamool MP’s “conduct has further been found to be unbecoming as a member of parliament for accepting gifts and illegal gratification from a businessman to further his interest which is a serious misdemeanour and highly deplorable conduct.”
After investigating the complaint filed by BJP MP Nishikant Dubey, the Ethics Committee found Moitra guilty of “unethical conduct” and contempt of the House for disclosing her login credentials for the Lok Sabha website to unauthorized individuals. The panel stated that these kinds of actions had an unstoppable effect on national security.
In the Lok Sabha, Dubey accused Moitra of posing questions intended to discredit Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Adani Group at the request of businessman Darshan Hiranandani in exchange for gifts.
Mahua Moitra, meantime, petitioned the Supreme Court on Monday, claiming that her removal from the Lok Sabha was “illegal.”
After her expulsion, the 49-year-old leader compared the situation to being hanged by a “kangaroo court” in remarks to reporters. She further claimed that the government was using a parliamentary panel as a weapon to subdue the opposition.
