External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Sunday described terrorism as a serious threat to global peace, asserting that no justification could legitimise its use as an instrument of statecraft.
Addressing the Chinmaya Amrit Mahotsav Global Sammelan organised to mark United Nations Day, he said terrorism persisted because some countries continued to place political interests above the need to eliminate the menace.
Jaishankar urged the international community to recognise the shared threat and strengthen cooperation against terrorism in all its forms.
Referring to the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and West Asia, Jaishankar said interconnected global conditions meant that distant populations also suffered the consequences of wars.
He stressed that countries could not remain passive observers and reiterated India’s position that dialogue and diplomacy offered the way towards peace.
He added that New Delhi remained committed to pursuing diplomatic efforts and cooperating with international partners.
Jaishankar highlighted the financial, fuel, food and fertiliser challenges confronting the Global South, describing them as the ‘4F crisis’.
He said developed nations also had a stake in resolving these problems. He called for reducing risks in the international economy, diversifying supply options and addressing market distortions caused by restrictions and critical bottlenecks.
Discussing artificial intelligence (AI), the External Affairs Minister argued that its development and governance should not remain concentrated in the hands of a few.
He reiterated India’s support for a responsible, inclusive and human-centric approach.
Jaishankar also called for reforms to the United Nations, arguing that major sections of the international community remained underrepresented in global decision-making.
He urged the UN to demonstrate leadership and respond actively to international crises rather than remain a passive observer.
